During my trip to Sri Lanka I was on the wonderful market in Trincomalee, Sri Lanka. One of the vendors was showing his rice to customers and when I asked if he would do it again for my camera, he didn't mind repeating it.

Trincomalee is a city in the north eastern part of the country and has been of strategic importance that has shaped its recent history. The great European powers in bygone centuries vied for mastery of the harbor. The Portuguese, the Dutch, the French, and the English, each held it in turn, and there have been many sea battles nearby.

Now it is mainly known for its wonderful beaches and thousands of tourists are visiting the area and come for swimming, snorkling and diving.

But only 35 years ago it suffered a lot during the civil war of 1985 when there were heavy fights between the Tamil civilians and the Sri Lankan military and Sinhalese home guards. In a succession of events that spanned over two months, scores of Tamil civilians were massacred and thousands were driven out by the Sri Lankan military and Sinhalese mobs in order to colonize the area.
