Description
Camels in the desert of Wahiba Sands in Oman.
The camel, also called the “Ship of the Desert” is a vital part of the Omani Society, for it represents a deeply appreciated and highly valued tradition. Camels were not only the main means of transport in the past but also provided their owners with a steady diet of fresh milk and meat. It is widely known that it is one of the few species that can withstand the hardship of desert travel, making it very valuable for those living in and around the large desert areas of Oman.
Omani camels are of medium size and known for their strength and speed. Colour varies by region with Dhofari camels (from the south of Oman) tending to be black, while in the Northern Regions of Oman they are red, blonde, or white. The fact that a good racing camel can be worth over USD 200,000, shows how much they are valued!
