Beautiful canal with boats and a bridge in Venice, Italy. One of the smaller canals in Venice ending in the lagoon.

Although the city is facing some major challenges (including financial difficulties, pollution, an excessive number of tourists and problems caused by cruise ships sailing close to the buildings), Venice remains a very popular tourist destination. It is estimated that approximately 20 million tourists visit Venice annually and that number only increases as each year passes.

Climate change challenges the sinking city of Venice. The Italian city of Venice is prone to frequent flooding because it has sunk five inches over the last century, but it is also grappling with a new challenge: sea-level rise, caused by climate change, which increases the severity.
