Description
View on the famous Askja crater lake in Iceland and Herdubreid table mountain from a plane.
In March 2023 the frozen crater lake is rapidly melting. Volcanologists in Iceland report that the Askja volcano is likely to erupt “sooner rather than later.” Temperature patterns at the surface of Lake Askja suggest that geothermal flux had significantly increased over the past few weeks.
On 28/29 March 1875 there was a huge erupton from this volcano. The eruption column was seen throughout Iceland and lasted 17 hours. The volcanic ash was of such substance that it was impossible to farm any more. Many Icelandic people migrated to the USA where you can still find Icelandic villages like Gimli in North Dakota.
