Cactus plants in the Jardin de Cactus in Lanzarote, Canary Islands, Spain.

The Canary Islands are beautiful islands and although Spanish, are located west of the African continent in the Atlantic Ocean. Most of these islands are volcanic though some more than others. Lanzarote is both beautiful and volcanic and had one famous inhabitant, the architect Cesar Manrique who created this cactus garden close to his house.

He was a Spanish artist, sculptor, architect and activist and created Volcano House, Taro de Tahiche (1968), the restaurant at the restored Castillo de San José at Arrecife (1976), his Palm Grove House at Haria (1986), the art, culture and tourism centre at Jameos del Agua, the Mirador del Rio (1973) and this Jardin de Cactus at Guatiza in Lanzarote.

He had a major influence on the planning regulations on Lanzarote following his recognition of its potential for tourism and lobbied successfully to encourage the sustainable development of the industry. One aspect of this is the lack of high rise hotels on the island.
